Product Description
The everyday kootu, without the grinding.
Kootu is the gentle, thick dish of vegetables and dal that sits between the sambar and the poriyal on a South Indian plate. Mild, comforting, and made for hot rice. The part that usually takes time is the paste: coconut, pepper, cumin and roasted dal, ground fresh before it goes in.
This ready mix is that paste, already made. Urad dal, coconut, black pepper and cumin, with red chillies, asafoetida, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Cook your vegetables in a little water till just soft, add water and the mix, and simmer till thick and creamy. That’s the whole method.
Chow chow, cabbage or snake gourd are the classic choices. Hand-roasted in 5–7 kg small batches in T.Nagar, Chennai, and shipped within 10 days of roasting.
